"Two forgotten birthdays, eight steaks, one boat ride, and an hour in the hot tub". Late October, 1999. Ryan is now 16, a sophomore, on the varsity swim team in high school. He's had a drivers license for three months. Joey just turned 20 two days ago and still works at a coffee shop in town owned by a neighbor of ours. We heard that Ryan's mom (Ann) is moving from Goshen to Corbin, Kentucky with her third husband. Joey hasn't heard a peep out of his mother in almost two years now. We have no idea where she is anymore. She may be dead since she contracted HIV two years ago. The boys seem happier these days working well together as one person, one joint life. They started doing that at such a young age, they are really good at it without discussing things much. The boys first met when Ryan was in elementary school. They usually sleep in separate bedrooms and plan to continue as long as Ryan is in school. I met a guy online who is from Goshen. We've been dating for four months now. The boys met him for the first time two months ago, his first name is the same as mine, Gary. He is an electrical engineer and graduate of IU in Bloomington. He works at an automotive parts company in Goshen designing automotive computers and software for the big three in Detroit. Like me, he is not effeminate. You wouldn't know he was gay just by talking to him. Other Gary is in much better shape than me. OG is 5'10" 175#, dark blond hair, blue eyes, plain old inny bellybutton, well muscled but not too much, no washboard abs or anything like that, and like me he has above average diameter nipples, and like me his are wired for pleasure too. Gary and I are so much alike, we kid about being twins separated at birth. Just to avoid confusion at home, the boys agreed to call him "Other Gary" when he is in our house. I suspect it will eventually evolve into being called 'O.G.' He doesn't care. We're almost the same age, I am 3 months older. He grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and later around the Brickyard track near Indy. Also, we put the Ryan's Pleasure up for sale. Ryan is very upset by this decision but I told him I expect to have little time for a large cabin cruiser next summer and that I am thinking about moving to a warmer climate, since I can really do my job from anywhere on earth as long as I have an internet connection and reliable electricity. We have a large photo of the back end of the Pleasure on the Lake Wawasee sand bar, with Ryan and me sitting arm in arm on the back transom in our swim suits with huge smiles, with Joey out of focus sitting in the captains chair. It's enlarged to 18 inches tall and 2.5 feet wide, framed, on the wall of our living room. I had a friend of mine take the photo while standing in the water 20 feet behind the boat. Authors note: Since Joey struggled with brain damage from birth, over the years he became more and more dependent on Ryan to do most of the thinking for him, Joey was fully capable, just very slow to learn certain types of things. This form of dependency made Joey wordlessly feel he was actually a part of Ryan. So anything that was given to Ryan registered in Joey's mind as a gift to him equally. Nobody had to say to the boys that they had to share a gift, it happened wordlessly between the two. Most of the time Joey could actually hear what Ryan was thinking, like telepathy. That was God's gift to Joey to help him compensate for the ruin his parents inflicted on him during the pregnancy. This is why the boys spoke so little, because Ryan could think it and Joey could feel it. Ryan secretly felt inside like God put him on Earth to protect Joey. And in their own unique way the boys had already become like one complete person. For his 20th birthday we got Joey a new skateboard and as a joke a gift certificate for a haircut (which he gave to Scotty), along with $300 in cash all in five dollar bills (we were told he gave half of it to Ryan). For his 16th Birthday we had a party for Ryan with some close friends from school. He piloted the Pleasure onto the lake for part of his gathering. I heard later they snuck a bottle of champagne on board to celebrate. Before they left for the sand bar, Other Gary and I cooked eight ribeye steaks and baked potatoes for the party'ers, which were quickly consumed before they left. While they were gone, Other Gary and I went into my tub where he let me do him from on top. OG is an excellent bottom. Even though it was Indian summer the lake was way too cold for a swim. They still wanted to take one last trip because the Pleasure was put into winter storage in two more weeks. This was likely her last cruise of the year, next trip would be to the marina not too far from here. And it was possibly our last cruise ever on the Pleasure if it sold over the winter. There was a group of close friends, people that took the time to really get to know both Ryan and Joey. Scotty was one, along with three girls from the high school. They dropped anchor on the sand bar, the only boat in that part of the lake. It was getting late in the day, the shadows were long across the water. They left the canvas top up on the back for privacy. Ryan steering Joey standing next to him, while Scotty and the girls opened the bottle down in the cabin sitting around the table in the bunk. Ryan only dropped one anchor off the back end since there were no other boats, no need to keep one position. All the kids squeezed into the bunk told jokes and sipped paper cups of champagne, the cups brought a good memory back into Ryan's mind but he kept those thoughts to himself. The three girls, Summer, Susan and Lisa were sitting at the table with Scotty while Ryan and Joey sat in the far point of the bunk in the very bow of the boat, straight behind Scotty. In a bold move Scotty turned around looked down noticed the boys were holding hands between them. He asked, "So are you guys going to get married or what?" L: "Yeah Ryan, you never came out to us, but everyone knows. You guys are gay, right? The girls turned to stare at Ryan. Joey remained silent but gripped Ryan's hand firmer. Scotty twisted around to watch Ryan's answer. Ryan took in a deep breath in. R: "Yes and maybe." Ryan answered after about a seven second silent/painful pause. This was the first time Ryan had faced that question outside his immediate family. Joey remained silent. Summer: "Kiss him if you love him." Susan: "Yeah, we wanna see." Ryan turned looking Joey in the eye. Joey had a way of turning on sad puppy dog eyes when he needed to. His lower eye lids would droop just a little so his entire iris became visible. Joey could not do that on purpose. It just made him look so sexy, soft and vulnerable in Ryan's mind. Joey looked towards his feet as Ryan stared at the side of his face. Ryan leaned in placing a gentle kiss on the side of his face. Joey turned to face him, closed his eyes, leaning into Ryan. Both boys opened their mouths touching tongues then their lips aligned as they pressed together into an open-mouth lip lock. For the first time outside of the house, the boys sucked face in front of their peers. The girls grew huge grins, Summer and Susan started to tear up, Scotty turned looking at Summer wondering inside why that upset her. Lisa stared in awe, first time she watched two boys suck face with obvious passion. Very. Obvious. Passion. All three girls were briefly speechless. After a about fifteen seconds of sucking face, the boys separated and looked at the others smiling. Ryan said, "Was that enough?" Joey returned his stare to his feet. The girls and Scotty remained silent briefly. L: "I think it was beautiful." Summer: "I wish my Ashley could kiss like that." Susan: "I think it was wonderful, and romantic." Joey looked up smiling at Summer. Scotty: "Good job guys. A toast!" Scotty proclaimed holding his paper cup in the air. (Scotty had just missed what Summer just announced; she was gay too. Lisa and Susan heard it.) The four teens at the table raised their tiny paper cups over the table, then Lisa noticed the boys didn't have cups, grabbed the bottle and poured two more passing them to the back. In a flash, Joey dumped his into Ryan's cup holding his up for the toast. Nobody but Ryan saw the move. All six raised their cups as Scotty proclaimed, "To love, to life, to good friends, but most of all to devotion, patience, and forgiveness. Happy birthday Ryan and Joey!" Summer, Lisa, Susan, Joey: "Here here!" Then the five drank their four ounces of warm champagne. Joey faked it. About an hour later, Ryan piloted the Pleasure back home, tied it up, secured it and returned to the house. This was what Ryan and Joey thought was their birthday gift, this happened about 16 days ago. Neither boy knew what we had in store for them and had already forgotten about birthdays when we sprung our surprise. They were totally caught off guard, especially Joey. Only OG and I knew that actual target in this party was Joey. He had no clue what was coming. Other Gary had the idea for Ryan's actual 16th birthday present. You see Other Gary is a bit of a backyard mechanic. He spied a vehicle at the auto auction a few weeks ago and after some discussion we agreed it would be perfect for Ryan. It was Other Gary's idea of how to give it to him and also how to celebrate Joey's birthday as well. About sixteen days after Ryan's birthday Other Gary was over for the fourth time for dinner. Ryan was home, Joey was due home any minute. Five minutes later Joey walked in the front door after being dropped off by his boss at the end of our driveway. He was wearing his coffee shop shirt, long sleeve navy blue. He had unbuttoned it down almost to the level of his stomach showing off a slice of his hairless flat chest after work. J: "Whose cars are those in the street?" We were sitting at the table talking with Ryan about college plans waiting on Joey to return so we could eat. Other Gary said, "You mean my car?" Joey said, "No, yours is in the driveway, the cars in the street at the curb." Ryan got up walking to the kitchen window, looking out he said, "I've never seen `em before Dad, Joey let's go check out the plates so Dad can run them online to see whose they are." The boys walked out the front door, came back in after a few minutes with a piece of blank scrap paper. R: " Dad, they don't have plates, can you run `em by the temporary tag or VIN?" OG: "Is one a black Toyota Camry?" J: "Yeah" D: "Does it have tinted glass and a cracked windshield too?" R: "Yes it does." Other Gary glanced over his shoulder at Ryan then back at me, winked saying, "It's a 1994 Toyota Camry, it's your birthday present." I pulled the key ring out of my pocket tossing them across the room hitting Ryan in the middle of his chest. He made no attempt to catch it. The key ring fell to the carpet at Ryan's feet with the Toyota logo facing up. Ryan glanced down at the key ring at his feet then stared at OG and me. About two seconds later Ryan looked up at the ceiling, raised his right hand to his eyes, fainting right there in the middle of the living room. Joey caught him as he collapsed. OG and I jumped up and ran into the living room. Ryan started to come to before he actually hit the floor. He laid there staring at the three of us standing around him, then Joey knelt down and shook his head by the jaw. R: "Dad, that's not fucking funny!" D: " Fine, then. Take the keys, check it out for yourself." Joey grabbed the keys while Ryan started to sit up at our feet on the living room floor. OG leaned over, whispered into my ear, "What if gay boys don't like family size sedans?" I reached down to help Ryan to his feet. Joey ran out to the street, pushed the key into the door lock, slowly turned it hearing the door unlock. He grinned, as he opened the door then sat in the drivers seat. By this time Ryan walked to the door to watch Joey checking out the car. After a few seconds the motor kicked over, the headlights came on, Joey moved the Camry to our driveway and shut off the motor. He saw a small white envelope on the passenger seat with the letters, "To: J.W.", folded it and stuffed it in his shirt pocket. Then he got out locked the door, jingled the keys in the air for Ryan to see with a huge toothy smile on his face. Joey ran back to the front door. A tall skinny kid in a coffee shop uniform with the wind blowing his shirt open as he ran. Ryan turned around looking at me with tears in his eyes, leaned in and hugged me, resting his chin on my shoulder. Joey walked back to the front door standing outside still. Ryan reached his other hand over to OG and gently pinched his left nipple then returned his arm to hugging me. OG smiled watching. We backed away from the door so Joey could come back inside. We all went to the table to eat dinner. It took about fifteen minutes for Ryan to fully quit wiping tears from his eyes. And for one brief moment in time, we actually made Ryan truly speechless. Another kodak moment missed! I told Ryan we were going to drive it to Other Gary's house tomorrow where the windshield would be replaced, new battery, new wiper arms and blades, new tires, complete drive train service, drive wheel alignment, and new brakes. It would be gone for about six days to get all this work done. Ryan nodded yes to it all but kept munching the food OG purchased at the Vienna Chicago Dog place in town on the way here. J: " I love us all, every one!" He looked around the table raising his glass in the air. OG: "Here here!" D: "Cheers!" R: "Rock-on!" We held our glasses for one good joint clink then got up after eating. OG and I went to the basement room, while the boys went outside to inspect Ryan's new wheels. Joey was so happy because any gift to Ryan was like a gift to Joey as well. About one hour later I heard stomping on the floor upstairs after I thought I heard our door bell ring. Joey came to the basement door and yelled, "Dad, there are two guys here to see you!" OG and I smiled at each other then walked upstairs. The two people were strangers to me but one of was a friend of OG's from the auto auction and that guy's business partner. This is where we got the Camry. We walked outside to talk briefly in the driveway, I passed them an envelope he handed me a manila envelope with a string tie clasp. I opened it looked inside, reached to OG's friend shook his hand. The two men got into their tow truck and drove off. All the while the boys stood in the front door watching. Other Gary and I walked to the house walked in and closed the door. The boys walked into the living room wondering what was going on. I stepped up close to Joey, since he was four inches taller than I was I didn't get too close to make it really awkward. I looked at Ryan first, then at Joey. My lower lip started to quiver. My eyes filled up with tears as I tried to speak in my most deadly serious sounding parenting voice, which I have never done before to Joey. I wasn't very good at straight faced serious talk, except when I was mad. D: "You know son I'm not good at speeches. I had something I wanted to tell you but... I don't think I can right now." I reached up to my eyes with my arm to wipe my tears, my lower lip vibrating trying really hard not to cry. I looked down at my shoes then back into Joey's eyes. I felt in that moment that my soul was reaching his. Fighting back crying I told Joey, "I love you son." He was staring down into my eyes, tears now in his eyes with a look of inner pain and innocent love behind his bright baby blues. It felt like those three words took an hour to speak out loud. I was fighting crying so hard right now. I reached up placing my left hand briefly on his shoulder, leaned in to give him a hug. I reached my arms around his bony back, squeezing him very firmly, rocking gently slightly side to side with a twisting motion. Then I leaned back maintaining eye contact. Joey had the look of sad love on his face but his return stare was so compelling I found it briefly impossible to speak or move. I felt I was being pulled into his heart. One more tear drop fell across his cheek from his left eye onto his navy blue long sleeve work shirt. I stepped back, glanced over at OG and winked. I shoved the manila envelope into Joey's chest stepping back more as we all watched him. Joey slowly unwound the string opening it to see a purple and white piece of paper and a key. He looked at me, paused to think about seven long seconds (because it takes him longer), then his eyebrows lifted almost to his hair line. He took a few long steps between us, ripped open the front door, popped opened the storm door almost flying out onto the porch. He ran like the wind to the street to the side of a navy blue 1993 Honda Civic, inserting the key. He slowly rotated it to hear the door unlock, looked up at us and smiled. His ears sticking out. He opened the door, sat in the drivers seat, started the motor, parked the car in our driveway, lowered his forehead to the steering wheel and cried like a baby. We could see his head gently bouncing. OG and I walked away from the door. Ryan stayed in the doorway watching Joey sobbing in his first car but left him alone briefly. It was starting to rain outside. I thought to myself, `He's not going to be able to give half of this to Ryan!' OG and I sat at the dining room table. Ryan looked over at us so I said to him, "And you, young man, will stop taking all of us for granted." Ryan looked back at the driveway, deep in thought. After about three minutes Ryan walked out to the driveway. He got in the passenger seat, shut off the Honda. The boys held hands cranked the stereo or talked until almost 9:00 pm in Joey's new car. Ryan later told me he went back into his bedroom about 8:00pm to get a blanket then went back to Joey's car. They got into the back seat and laid down together in the dark under the blanket and kissed for about 20 minutes non-stop. It took Joey about one hour to fully recover his composure. Joey is awkward about getting gifts because he was not raised by his mother to know giving, love and acceptance. Joey had been crying because it reminded him how much his mother had hurt him and how awkward he felt in what should be normal happy situations. Joey laid on his back in the back seat of his new first car. Ryan climbed in the back door laying on top of him bending his knees so his toes pressed against the back door window. It was truly a tangle of teenager body parts but they never noticed. The boys laid in a pile, Joey on the bottom, their faces just inches apart just talking. Smiling. R: "Remember how we met?" J: "Yeah, you were riding down my street. I was sitting by my mom, she was drinking beers listening to the radio, gettin' loud about crap at her job." J: "I watched you go by but didn't know who you were, we'd only lived in that house for a week." R: "I remember when you walked to the street to stop me I thought you were gonna beat me up or something, you looked so tall and scary back then." R: "Lemme think, you said, 'Hey kid, what you doing on my street?' And I thought you were gonna take my bike, I was so scared." R: "You were like a grown-up to me back then." J: "I thought you were the cutest thing. You looked really small. Was your dad alive then?" R: "Uhhh No, he just died and we had to move into a rental house right away, like right after the funeral. That's how my mom met Gary. Welcome Wagon or something like that." R: "I hardly remember any of that. All I know is when we met again at the beach and I saw you with your shirt off I had an instant crush." J: "You had a crush on me because of how I looked, my ears stickin' out too?" R: "Joseph Wilson, I never paid attention to your fucking ears God Damn it. Only you care about that shit. You know if you asked my dad he would gladly pay to have them fixed to lay back. All you gotta do is grow enough balls to ask, I promise you he won't say no." J: "Let's stop talking about it." R: "Are you happy right now?" J: "Any time we're together I'm happy." R: "No, are you truly happy inside right now." J: "It's getting better." J: "I really love your dad." R: "Brother, he's OUR dad, not just my dad." J: "He's the kind of father I always wanted." R: "Maybe you should listen to your own words brother." J: "Oh yeah." R: "Do you love me?" J: "All the time." R: "No, do you really really love me?" J: "You're gonna make me cry again." R: "Just answer the question bro." J: "I love you and I wanna spend the rest of my life with you, just you and nobody else." R: "Are we gonna have kids?" J: "Kids? Maybe you should graduate school first." R: "Wanna do me?" J: "We should go to bed soon, I'm tired." R: "I love you too brother, and I can't imagine living without you." J: "Okay let's go inside." R: "I'm not done." Silence. Ryan pulled Joey's shirt fully open, turned his head to face the front of the car and set his head on Joey's smooth bare chest, closed his eyes and let out a sigh. About a minute later he spoke again. R: "You know this is like our first pillow talk and we're in the back seat of your car under a blanket, how romantic is that?" J: "It's kinda funny. Shouldn't we be at a drive-in movie?" R: "I really love you Joseph Wilson. You, Dad, and completing school are all I think about anymore." J: "Uh, there was an envelope on the front seat of your truck, it had my initials on it so I grabbed it." He fished a badly crumpled envelope out of his shirt pocket and handed it to Ryan. It was about the size of a card that comes with gift flowers. J: "Would you read it to me?" Ryan saw a small white envelope, badly crumpled with the handwritten letters,'To: J.W.' on the front. He opened it to find a business card, turning it to the front he read it outloud to Joey: "Scott Levy, MD. Maxiofacial, Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery. 1515 S. Central Ave. Goshen." Ryan turned it over, on the back side handwritten it said, "Paid in full - if you want it. Love, Dad." It was essentially a gift certificate to have Joey's ears fixed if he wanted. All expenses paid. Joey stared into Ryan's eyes. Joey was somewhere between grateful and scared. Ryan turned his head laying the side of his face on Joey's chest briefly. It was starting to drizzle again outside and it was getting really cold inside the back seat of Joey's car. The windows were steamed up. After about five minutes of silence as the boys thought about each other in a pile of teenager bones, they got up to go back inside the house to Ryan's room. We watched the driveway on the security camera for a short time, then I moved OG to the recliner and sucked him off until he came in my mouth. I love the taste of dick and the smell of his groin. I had him switch to a special non-scented soap just for nights when he came to our place. That night, the boys slept together on Ryan's sofa. Both in jeans and T-shirts. Joey held Ryan from behind all night with his face planted firmly into the back of Ryan's head. OG drove home around 11pm. I slept on the sofa in the basement. I fell asleep praying the boys would wake up a little more mature in the morning. More to come..... For more info about the writer and his future books see: borischen dot webs dot com
